Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is a tetrameric glycoprotein belonging to the family of serine hydrolases known as cholinesterases. While there is currently no know physiological function for BChE, it has been shown to behave as a bioscavenger against cocaine toxicity and organophosphorus nerve agents.
