Retinol Binding Protein 4(RBP4) is thought to link obesity with insulin resistance and Type 2 Diabetes. Present in plasma of healthy individuals at a level of approximately 40 mg/L, RBP4 levels are higher in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance and Type 2 Diabetes. RBP4 levels are increased in pregnant women, especially those with gestational diabetes. Increased levels of RBP4 levels are also seen in individuals with cardiovascular disease, as RBP4 levels appear to correlate with levels of APO B-containing lipoproteins-- LDL, VLDL, and small dense LDL.
