Biological Significance: S-100 is a low molecular weight, cytoplasmic, calcium binding protein. It is traditionally found in the brain, heart and muscle tissue. S-100 has two subunits (alpha-chain and beta-chain) and exists in several different forms. The alpha-alpha homodimer is referred to in literature as either the S-100αα or S-100a(0), the beta-beta homodimer is referred to in literature as S-100b and the alpha-beta heterodimer is referred to in literature as S-100a. ART purifies a mixture of all forms (S-100), S-100αα (<5% beta chain contamination by Western Blot), and S-100b (<10% alpha chain contamination by Western Blot).
